i have an older 305 motor that i want to hop up for a for a light truck, ( 50 studibaker ). Based by what i know, heads, cam, intake and carb is the only thing i now of for now. any ideas whithout breaking the bank?

Pretty much those are your best course. A good cam swap will help out your 305 a lot. Boosting the compression will also give you more power.

I'm not trying to knock your engine, but it is easier and cheaper to do a 350. For the same amount of time and money spent your 350 will be head and shoulders over the 305.

I am doing the same build. 84 305 I am using the 601 heads with a mild home port job. I am useing flat top pistons a melling mtc-1 cam. performer intake with a quadrajet. And Hedman headers.I am hopeing to better mpg than a 350.

thanks for the input 55 guy, im not trying to stick with the 305 for a long period of time, just got the motor cheap and trying to get a little more out of it than usual. i hear lunati makes a decent cam, was wondering how radical i could go, to get a little lope. or is that ridiculus for a 305? this is my first build so any input would be greatly appreciated.
