Can anyone tell me how much lift I can use with 1.6 rockers installed on stock vortec heads? Thanks ( I have a pair of 6.2s in my boat and want to  switch to 1.6 for a little more power)

I think that in stock trim the Vortec heads can handle up to .480+- lift.  Someone correct me if I am wrong.  .480/1.6 would be a max of 0.300 lobe lift.  Again, I think that that is what is correct, but I am just trying to recollect what I have read.

I believe that the lift of the cam in the engine now is a 465. that would roughly calculate out to a 310 cam(if my calculations are correct) If that is the case a 1.6 rocker would be a .496.  Do you think that is to much for these heads without some machining? I would think someone here has had to try this. thanks for the help Dwight Bowers

I would say that it is worth the extra money to have the spring seat machined for a stiffer spring.  I don't think that it cost too much to do it, and it would be better than experiencing your springs binding on you.  If you have not already bought the heads, then you can talk to ScogginDickey and they have Vortec's with stiffer springs already installed for just a little more cost.  If you already have the heads, then yes, I would machine them for better springs.

The heads are on the engines already. Mercruiser uses them on the newer 6.2 engines. I am looking at some ways to make a little more power while keeping it simple. I remember that a rocker switch used to be a easy way to gain a little. But if I have to pull the heads and get machining done I may wait until I do a major power increase. Then again it will need to be done someday...decisions. Do you know if this is something that can be done on installed heads? I would think that the heads would have to be removed. thanks Dwight

ya, pretty sure you would have to remove the heads to do the job right.
