Car is '85 Camaro w/ 88-up (exact year is unknown) 350 converted from TPI to carb. Engine is stock other than edelbrock intake and carb. Running Holley electric fuel pump with regulator and running about 7-1/2 psi. Here is my problem: the car will start, run and drive but will stall without warning (somtimes the car will backfire, but most of the time it just quits).. Car will restart and idle great then just quit again without warning or sputtering. There is no given time period, I got it to run 3 hrs yesterday before having trouble with it again. During that time I blew the muffler into pieces while on the freeway, then it died. I I can't seem to track down this problem. I recently changed the plugs, cap, coil, and wires thinking it was ignition. I'm gettin gas and spark. have no idea where to look next other than maybe vacuum leak (but like I said the car idles smooth), or a short somewhere? This is my daily driver and any help pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated, thanks. Any info needed will be provided, this is all I could think of right now.

Have you changed the ignition module? That could be the problem. Pull the module off and take it to Autozone and have it tested (or another parts store that can test them).

Did the distributor get changed too? Might be kinda easy to over look, but the feed back carbs and the fuel injection had that hei with out vac advance and was comp controlled. Have to swap that distributor out too if you wanna run a carb.

The distributor is from a 305 that was carb'd. The 350 didn't have one when i bought it, so I pulled the distributor off the blown (as in kaput, not as in blower) 305 and threw it on. I was short on $$ so I figured i'd give it a shot. Would that have to be changed even tho it came off a carb'd engine?
Btw, got that ignition module today. Haven't put it on yet, Advance nor Auto Zone didn't have it. Had to go to Napa.
Thanks again.

Put on the new ignition module, along with new wires. Seems to idle smoother and it hasn't stalled all day. Seems my stalling problem is fixed. Only thing is now it's a lil hard to start. W/out givin it gas, it will catch, then die. I'm thinkin maybe just a carb tuning issue. Thanks for all the help fellas.

Ok, so after a few days of problem free driving, now it's starting all over again. It's stalled on me 3 times today. Yesterday was horrible. I talked to some car buddies and one said he had the same problem in his 350Z. He took it to a shop and it was the rings, apparently the rings on two pistons went "kablooie" (his words, not mine). Any ideas? Could I have blown, cracked, broken a ring? The car seems to run fine after warmed up and at higher RPMS (above 1250). At idle in drive it idles really rough. I've did all I can think of with the exception of a compression test, which is next on the list. Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

I dont like the electric pump/regulator combo. You didnt mention what carb you're useing. Quadrajet and Edelbrock run best 4 1/2-6 psi. Any more and you can push gas past the needle. That sounds like the rough idle issue. Does it run rich at idle when it's acting up? The backfire issue is lack of fuel, or lack of ign. power. Check the electric going to that pump. Also check the battery wire into the distributor. Without car running, probe with test light and see if you can make power cut in-out. Hope this helps.
