So i have a bbc 454 with a com cams 11-246-3 In..552 Exg..555, 110.0deg lobe seperation, cam is 4 deg adv from crank........
Well i just fired this thing for the first time and when i use the timing light i have to set the dist. at aroun 20-30 deg for it to run decent. And  if i set it at around 12-16 it misses, lopes real bad backfires, just no good. any info Please on what could be goin on?

Does it have a new harmonic balancer or an original. If it is a used or old balancer the outer ring may have turned on the inner ring and its giving you wacky timing numbers. use a piston stop in the number 1 cyl to determine if the timing mark on the balancer is correct

Seems that you installed a new cam, I assume you phased it to the motor and would have verified true TDC both in piston position and crank (balancer) position. If so,you would know the timing marks were accurate. If you did it the quikie way then you will have to put a wire down the #1 cylinder and follow the piston to TDC, and see if your marks line up. That sounds just like the Xtreme Marine cam I used to run in my 502 boat engine. I ran 12deg. base and 34 total. What carb are you running?

A piston stop through the plug hole does not work in a BBC.

Yah, im running a new harmonic balancer i picked up from jegs. Basically the only thing on my engine that is the original block would be the block. New complete rotating assy and so on. And i degreed the cam from true tdc, used the lobe lift dial indicator  and degree wheel to check everything to make sure cam was true to spec card then degreed the cam i believe 2 teeth if i remember correctly, which came out to be 4 deg advanced. But im still having a hard time with this, just put on new plug wires, plugs and replaced my hei distributor because the one i was using was and old rebuilt one i had. And im still getting the same results. And thanks to this problem and my father im now missing most of my left eyebrow, my entire left eyelash and a good ammount of hair on the side of my head. So i appreciate all the help so far and all that is coming and hope to figure this out soon.

When you say two teeth, what does that mean? That cam is ground with 4deg. , so it has 4deg. adv. when installed straight-up.

With the cam installed straight up it matched  spec on card. The cam is 4 deg advanced from spec card.

I'm trying to understand the "two teeth" your talking about, two post's ago. Did you install staight up and then advance cam by skipping two teeth in the timing gears?
