Every time I drive my car I smell gas really bad. I have no leaks. Then it takes awhile for the smell to go away after it sits. I dont understand it. Any ideas?

Drop the tank and make sure you don't have any pinholes on the top of the tank.
What year/make car is this? Could be a problem with the evap cannister/purge system.
You've got gas leaking somewhere, so the only way to find the problem is a full inspection of your car's whole fuel system.

I really dont have any leaks. The smell only comes from the engine compartment. And the carb I have doesnt have enough vac hook ups for the evap canister. Is this a problem? Should I make it a point to make sure that is hooked up instead of something else? I also noticed when the engine is running and I put it in gear with my foot on the break I get a whistling noise like a vac leak but I cant find it. Are these problems related or just a coincidence?

I see we have no other takers. Have to figure it out myself.

Is the vaccum leak a brake booster? Does it whisle only when your foot is on the brake at idle. Try sitting on a hill so it doesnt roll, and let it idle in gear. Any whistle? What carb do you have? Can you pinpoint if the odor is near the fuel pump? Gas in the oil?

If the canister is receiving vapor from the tank and is not being purged, this could easily be your problem.

Charcoal cannister is probably where the fumes are coming from. I had the same problem. Not really a big deal but the fumes are a bit smelly. you didn't say what kind or how old the car is but check the vaccuum lines to the cannister, might have gotten old and cracked or broken
