I have a 1987 Chevy Suburban with a 5.7 Throttle Body Injected (TBI) that I am installing into a 1954 Chevy. I have to change all of the front pulleys and water pump and go to a short water pump for radiator clearance. In doing this, I will be eliminating the air pump and diverter valve. I need to know if this is going to cause a problem with the engine performance or with the O2 sensor and what do I do with the two wires that go to the disconnected diverter valve. What is it going to do to check engine light? Will it always be on?

The throttle body wasn't all that great, so I would go with a carb and eliminate all the hocus-pocus that goes along with fuel injection. Nice, simple, and clean.

I beg to differ. I've got a '92 TBI truck, and it works just fine, better than a carb in many respects.
No, removing the emissions equipment won't hurt anything. Only trucks in California had AIR pumps (I live I Florida, my '92 doesn't have that stuff), so I'd just termiate those wires and cap them off. The Ox sensor won't be affected. The EGR valve was more involved with the AIR system.
One thing I would recommend for a perofrmance boost, find the TBI unit and manifold from a '92-'95 full size GM truck. In '92, the TBI unit CFM was increased (manifold modified for larger butterflies), so you'll get more power, and it'll bolt right up to everything else from your '87 motor.

I resently put a 406ci on my 78 El Camino it has a 530 krane cam, port and polished 99 vortech heads, a performer RPM intake, 750 deamon carb, powerglide trany, and 4.10 gear ratio. I have not ran the car yet. I have another 400 block laying around which I want to throw on the el camino but I don't know what I should do with that block either make it a 406 or a 377 because some of my friends tell me that I can get a farter 1/4 mile time on a 406 than on 377 so my question is what should I do? I mean I already have a 406 should I try making a 377 on which one would be quiker?
