ive got a 1979 Chevy Camaro and its got a 350 in it. before i get to my question i'll let you know whats all done to the motor. it's got an Holley 4 barrel carb (im not sure what size yet) Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, and headers. The guy i bought it from said it had a cam but wasnt sure, but its got stock 1979 camaro heads. But my question is I want to build it up and i heard vortec heads a pretty good but you need to get a vortec intake or longer pushrods or roller lifters, i also want to get a big cam to put into it. i was wondering if it would be worth it changing it to vortec or just getting a big cam and different head.

Well, depending on what you consider a big cam a aftermarket head may do a better job for you than a vortec head.
Use the search function on the forum and you will find many topics on vortec heads, this will help you decide what you're going to do.
Pushrod length shouldn't change by much if any with a swap to vortec heads. The vortecs do not have guideplates and rely on self-aligning rocker arms, so this would be the only difference. You do need a vortec-specific intake manifold.

Scoogin-Dickey has upgraded Vortecs for around $700 or aftermarket aluminum starting at 800.00 and AFR 180's about $1200 which are considered some of the best for high flow numbers.Less cam and highflow heads are the trend it seems, tell us about the rest of the drivetrain. WIEDER

you cant put to big of a cam with vortec heads unless giudes are ground down. because spring retainer will hit and springs will bind

To make Vortecs streetworthy you end doing what Scoogin-Dickey offers and that includes shorter guides. Now you can see where you can go up a notch and get aluminum instead. WIEDER
