as far as i know a 307 is a bored 30 over 302.  and i don't think 305's were out until the mid to late 70's so if it is a '71 motor than it should be a 302 which has a 4 inch bore.  try this sight:

Chances are real good it's a 307: 3.25" 327 stroke with 3.875" 283 pistons with a higher wristpin. It's a low rpm economy powerplant with only 2 barrel carbs from the factory.A {little} more cam ,intake, headers ,500cfm carb and a hotter spark. She'll be a good little runner just don't expect alot for big power numbers with old tech and small bores. My last post only applies to people that REALLY have a 307 not Robbyxr200 the 305 owner.

That casting number references to a 305 block at Mortec.

A GM 307 is NOT a bored 302. A .030" over 302 figures to be approximately 306 cubic inches. The difference between the 302, 305, and 307 are significant. All three of them use different bores AND strokes to arrive at 5.0 liters.

huh, i had never heard of a 307 until this post.  hard to believe that after all these years of being a chevy guy i had never heard of that motor.  or maybe i just alwasy assumed that it was a modified 302 and didnt pay much attention whenever someone mentioned it.
