well im not certin that they did but heres my problem, i installed a new comp 268 into my 350, i used new springs, new lifters, broke in the cam how the instructions said, i put mabye 3 hours on the motor (most of whitch at wot lol), and then the motor started knocking bad, so i took it all apart and pretty much every lobe on the camshaft is worn down and there was a pile of metal filings in the botom of the pan, and every rod bearing was wiped out, im assuming my rod bearings went casue of the metal filings off the camshaft, but what im wondering is how this damn camshaft worn out so fast, i work in a GM shop and had a bunch of the old timers look it over at practiacly every step of the way, if anybody has any sugestions or similar problems with comp cams i would really appreciate to hear from you

If you're not certain why would the title of this thread so blatantly place blame on Comp Cams for the 'destruction' of your motor? If all the lobes went flat, I'm very certain that it was only your fault that your engine is in need of rebuild.

What exactly were the new springs you used? What was their installed height and seat & open pressure? What rocker arms did you use? What precisely was your break-in procedure? Did the engine start IMMEDIATELY when it was first assembled? Were all the valves adjusted correctly throughout the break-in and the time you drove the vehicle? Did you run the engine for 20-30 minutes varying the revs between 2000-3000 rpm? Was their oil making its way to the top of the cylinder head when you primed it? What lubrication did you use on the lifters & cam for the assembly?

Only if you really check out thoroughly would I suggest contacting Comp Cams to check on their warranty setup for their cams. This may also be void if you got their cams from an unknown distributor. If you did buy straight from Comp or a recognized Comp affiliate you may be able to send in your cam in its current destroyed state and have them analyze and determine who was at 'fault.'

Did you get the oil pump drive engaged to the distributer after all the changes? Sound like it had no oil pressure with all the damage.

Wooh, wakeup call for whoever asked if the oil pump was engaged. He said that put HOURS on the engine, this would be pretty difficult to do with zero oil flow.

Here is what just happened to me

69 chevelle 427 had too big a cam for me so I decided to put in a new one, the motor had approx 500 miles on it,
put in a new compcams xe284H did everything they said, used a large bottle of their assembly lube and there break in oil, started it and ran it at 2800 rpm for 30 min.

the # 8 lifter and cam lobe were destroyed. and the metal im sure is everywhere.

compcams said probably the lifter bore is shifted

if so why did my other cam work fine no scarring at all.  they also said its common and to take the motor apart and put in new bearings>>>>*&()*^)(*^(^_

I think I will have the cam tested for hardness and see what the deal is I can belive that you could ruin a cam this quick i will try to post pics.

I am putting in a diff cam I will let you know, if it works I may sue them.  this sucks

For the first guy, to wipe out every lobe says there was a common interference with the whole valvetrain. Did the lift on the cam cause a retainer to guide interference? Valve spring coil bind? Too much valve spring pressure? Count on something you did wrong for the failure.

Sue them? Haha, you're dreaming...

You would be eaten alive - you don't think Comp cams hasn't dealt with this thousands of times before and have clauses that exempt them from any REAL legal damage. Even then, you have to know what it would be like to sue a multi-million company.

It's possibly you could get a warranty cam out of the deal though, but that's about it. Even then the majority of the time it's the user's fault and not the cam manufacturer. You didn't even say if you bought a new set of lifters with the new cam, so did you? Did you use their recommended valve springs? If not, they aren't at fault!
