I am looking to build my first V8. I have never built an engine before. I am searching for a buildable Chevy V8. Don't much care about which one. Just looking for sugestions on a good motor to cut my teeth on. Looking for low cost and good performance out. Any sugestions would be apreciated. Might just go out to the local junk yard and buy the first 350 I come across. What do I need to look for? I have a 1976 Nova that will be the home for the new engine. I will even take donations.

Technology has improved the condition of core engines over the years. This is why many believe there is more potential in late-model engines. Early-model stuff will probably have lead deposits, "soft" seats, ruined guides, need boring, etcetera.

Take a look at this article...

I'd say look for an '87-'98 Chevy truck 350 for your first motor build. Plentiful, cheap, and a good foundation for a motor build.
