What exactly are you going to do with the stock valve sizes and carburetor flow?

Pull out the 283 and install at least a 350cu if you want to make 400 street hp under 6000rpm.In order for a 283 to make that power you'll be shifting at 6500+ and needing lower rear gears. If you want to really buildup a 283 round up another core and retire your orignal 283.   WIEDER

I disagree I have personally seen 327s pull
low 11.0s at the strip in heavy cars i`m conf.
that a 283 can come close !!!!! at least some 12.5s with a 2900lb car !!!

It won't be easy. Static compression is probably going to be non-existent without dome pistons. A 2.02/1.6 setup I don't believe is possible with a 283 bore and even if the overbore and maybe some notching make it possible the shrouding would probably be too severe, making 1.94" intake valve a better choice.

You are going to have to get a small combustion chamber if you want to make more than 8.55:1 compression. Some would argue that this low static compression isn't going to allow a very big camshaft and they're probably right but if you're really wanting 375 peak horsepower you're going to be forced to cam a little big and accept the very soggy bottom-end. I say probably about a 280° grind on a 109° lobe separation, a solid probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

That's not true, with flat top pistons and small chambers, you can get the compression up.

But, both sides here have good points. If this is your Nova's original motor, I'd pull it and bag it, save for if you ever want to restore the car to stock, and build a good 327 to have fun with. I say 327 instead of 350 because the 327 can rev more because of the shorter stroke, and will be a great performer in your Nova.

Once again, you have disagreed with me but never even presented an argument...

Please define "getting the compression up."

Unless this thing is 'zero-decked,' which is highly unlikely, and uses a steel-shim head gasket (also unlikely) it's won't have 9:1 compression unless you have about a 56cc chamber.

There  we go some figures although I think that 56cc is a little small ---- is 60cc chamber heads availible ?????

Making top-end power is best left to a modular carb like a Holley or Demon, not an Edelbrock or AFB...

I'd look at a Demon 650 or a Holley 750.
