So I bought an 82 GMC s10,reg cab,long box.It alrady has a 1980 350 with all new gaskets,edelbrock manifold,valvecover,msd ignition+module,B&m pro ratchet shifter(truck is automatic),drag bars on the back,AR rims 235 rubber on front,255 on the back.Truck is lowered.
REAR END WENT!!I bought this truck with the blown diff, and I think that was the only thing that was stock on it. Can i replace the whole axle, out of a jimmy, sonoma, blazer? What gear ratio did they come with?Im looking for 3.23 or 3.42,to keep it somewhat economical.
Please help,any input is appriciated!

A 7.5 rear will survive with a mild 350 and no sticky tires. If you have plans of more power and sticky tires, maybe upgrade to stronger axles and $400 locker unit.Tell us your intentions with this junior truck. WIEDER

First of all thanks for the reply. My plan is to keep this truck for my work.im an airless spraying finisher.I do mostly hiway,so economy and reliability is what Im looking for.Im not looking for more power,to me its already beasty.
What would you recommend?rebuild this one(with new crown and pinion,or get an other rear end out of the similar models and put it in.What gearing did they come with?I think Im looking for 3.42 or 3.23.
What do you think.it does look like a drag truck, but it will only be used to cruise,no abuse.

I was involved in helping my brother rebuild my old 85 IROC rear with the 7.5 gear,it cost $600 to rebuild not including the heleix geared posi unit which was $375.I bet your starting to think more about a used rear, there should be plenty to choose from.3:42's should be available and of course find the lowest miles, most recycle yards have interchange info for you can R and R without a bunch of problems.Happy hunting WIEDER

I'd go junkyard hunting. You could probably score a rear out of a later S-10 for less than $200. The S-10 rear suspension didn't change through its whole life, so any year S-10 will work.
