Im building a 350 to put in a mud truck. ive had the block bored .030. ive got 2 valve relief flat top pistons and a .515 lift 300 duration cam. im trying to figure out what head would work best. I currently have 882 heads with 2.02, 1.94 valve, 60cc 305 heads (354434) cast #, and 58cc heads (14014416) cast #. i really need to run off pump gas for my class so i dont want too high compression.

This combination is most likely to perform VERY poorly. I can see you have an old, slow cam grind with an awful lot of seat duration. Holding the valves open longer requires more compression to regain low-speed and midrange power since the velocities within the induction and exhaust tracts are too slow to prevent reversion (in either case). Too much overlap with not enough compression means a very in-efficient and poorly running engine which will extend into the mid-range speeds for an engine such as this because your top power-making speeds will want to be around 5000 rpm with cast-iron OE cast heads.
I know that a mudtruck will most likely favor the top end but this can only be taken so far. This engine may not able to pick itself back up after stumbling down low.
I would step down the camshaft or step up the compression and induction volume.

thanks for the tip. i wasnt sure if the cam would do what i wanted. its a lunati bracket racer II cam out of my camaro. i was running the 58cc heads and .125 dometop pistons with 110 race gas. what type of head and cam combination would you suggest. the truck is a 78 LWB with a 4 speed and running 44in tires. with the gears i have it brings it back down to almost stock ratio. i also have a performer RPM intake. this truck will see very little street time. any suggestions would help.

Just out of curiosity, what gear are you running, and what class are you racing in?

im running 4.88 gears in a gm 14 bolt axles. depending on what bog it is im either running in 41" to 44" tire size or super stock class. i also bog a 79 bronco with a 429 SCJ that runs in 40 " or pro stock class. that bronco actually keeps up with those s-10 on full size frames.

ive found some 305 vortec heads off a 93 camaro rs. does anyone know if this will help my set up. i might be able to get a set of 64cc vortec heads but im not really wanting to spend that kind of cash right now.

seeing as how the vortecs everybody thinks of didnt come about untill '96 i doubt these are vortecs... i dont think a 305 was even an option for a camaro in 93 much less a vortec version... but if they are infact vortecs then you will still have the problem with not being able to run pump gas, and the valves are too small to be useful at higher rpm's( and to answer the question of bigger valves in these haeds, the chambers are not optimized to use any bigger valves)the 64cc vortecs are your gest choice

Just to give you another tip, switcing out to a 5.13 or 5.38 gearset will work much better with the 44's especialy with a smallblock. Another thing taht has always worked well for us around here, run TSL's up front and Boggers out back. I now it dosent give you any help with the heads issue, but a tip is a tip.

thanks for the tip. ive seen alot of people run the swampers on the fron and boggers on the back. i think im going to try that next time. well with the engine i butil it did exceptionally well, until both front axles broke. i ended up running the 58cc 305 heads with the factory 1.84 valves. it also has a .515 lunati bracket racer cam, kb 2-valve relief flattops, and a 750 demon carb. it never powered out and held 6800 rpm the entire time. i also ended up running 3.73 gears and low lock second gear. now if anyone has any ideas on a stronger front end let me know. ive got a dana 44 10 bold in the front, the back is a dana 60 so i dont think ill have to worry about it too much.
