in the chevy high performance magazine ( i think it is special editon on novas only } they show 1968 nova copo vin numbers.
where can i get 1969 vin numbers, not only copo but regular ss vin numbers.
i have a 1969 nova ss 396 car?
i am 95% sure that is a true big block car, but i do not have any documentation, no original motor or trans to verify this.
i know that 11427 in the vin means it came with a V-8 motor.
unlike other chevy ss models ( the red book )the nova
is not included.
any help would be appreciated.

without paperwork, there is no way to 100% prove anything. www.novaresource.com will give any signs of being real, but without proof, it's might as well be considered a clone. The only reason the COPO VINS are know, is because there were only 50 of them.

There is really no way to verify an SS from 1968-71 without some original paperwork. In-dash tachs, floor consoles/shifters, console gauges, bucket seats and even 12-bolt rears are NOT indications of a real SS. There were real Super Sport Novas built with the standard dash, column shifters, bench seats and 10-bolt rears. However, you can guess at it's originality. First, Super Sports have power front disc brakes. The next thing to check is the engine code. If the engine is original (the last 6 digits of the VIN are stamped on the engine block) and it has a application code (also stamped on the block) that decodes to an SS only engine, then you have a real SS. Without the original engine or some original paperwork, you're basically out of luck.

To be an SS, the begining of your VIN number should start with: 114279W

VIN Tag
Digit 1 GM Division  (1 = Chevrolet)
Digits 2 and 3 Model Series (14 = Nova, V8)
Digits 4 and 5 Body Style (27 = 2 door sedan)
Digit 6 Model Year (9 = 1969)
Digit 7 Assembly Plant (W = Willow Run, MI)
Digits 8 thru 13 Production Sequence #  (Starts at 300001)

Also check the cowl tag, to be an SS, line one should start with: 6911427WRN

Cowel Tag
69 = 1969
1 = Chevrolet
14 = Nova, V8
27 = 2 door sedan
WRN = Willow Run, MI

1968 thru 1972 Super Sports were limited to the L48 350, the L34 396 (1968-70 only) and the L78 396 (1968-70 only). Those engines are specific to the Super Sport and were not available in non-SS Novas.
