YOUR RIGHT ABOUT HEAT GENERATION WITH RESTRICTIVE INDUCTION,IT IS THE SINGLE MOST CAUSE OF LOW PERFORMANCE.DURING THE DAY I WORK FOR A FIRE APPARATUS MANUFACTURER(E-ONE)AND ONE OF OUR BIGGEST DEBATES IN THE SHOP IS OVER FRICTION LOSS.WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO MOVE LARGE VOLUMES OF LIQUID(OR IN THIS CASE AIR)YOU HAVE TO HAVE ENOUGH AREA TO FLOW OR MOVE THIS DISPLACEMENT EVEN UNDER PRESSURE.IN THIS CASE RESTRICTIVE CYLINDER HEADS CREATE LARGE AMOUNTS OF HEAT AND WE ALL KNOW THAT HEAT IS NOT GOOD.HEAT MAKES THE FUEL/AIR CHARGE EXPAND AND BREAK UP.IF YOU LOSE THE RESTRICTION THEN YOU ALSO CUT DOWN HEAT THEN YOUR CHARGE WILL REMAIN STABLE AND DENSE YEILDING A MORE POWERFUL BURN.THATS WHY I WAS SAYING THE MOST POPULAR POWER ADDER WAS NOS BECAUSE IT NOT ONLY GETS MORE AIR/FUEL INTO THE CYLINDER BUT KEEPS IT COOL AS WELL.THE ONLY TIME SUPERCHARGING BECOMES BENEFICIAL IS WHEN YOU CAN MULTIPLY OUTPUT VERSUS THE LOSS THAT IT TAKES TO DRIVE/OPERATE THESE COMPONENTS WHETHER IT BE TURBOS OR BELT DRIVEN CHARGERS.EVRYTHING IN THE LIST ABOVE IS LOOKING RESPECTABLE FOR A 305/F BODY BUILD BUT KEEP IN MIND THAT YOUR NOW AT A POINT WHERE THIS IS BECOMING A FINE LINE BETWEEN WHAT YOU CAN PRODUCE WITH THESE COMPONENTS AND WHAT YOU CAN GET TO THE GROUND.FUTHER IMPROVEMENTS WOULD BE IN THE FORM OF TUNING FROM THIS POINT ON BECAUSE THE COMPONENTS OF YOUR BUILD HAVE PROBABLY MET THERE MAX POTENTIAL.ONE IMPROVEMENT I WOULD SUGGEST IS A DIFFERENT CAM.YOU CAN RUN A LITTLE MORE LIFT BUT DEPENDING ON COMPRESSION RATIO MAYBE NOT SO MUCH DURATION.DURATION IS ONLY BENEFICIAL WITH HIGH COMPRESSION BECAUSE IT CHANGES YOUR POWERBAND AND EFFECTS COMPRESSION RATIO UNTIL YOU GET INTO THAT SPECIFIC RANGE BUT THATS ANOTHER STORY.I KNEW A GUY IN HIGH SCHOOL THAT INSTALLED A HUGE CAM IN A MONTE CARLO(I THINK IT WAS 1980 WITH A 262)BUT HE COULD NEVER GET THE THING STARTED,AND AFTER CHECKING COMPRESSION HE DIDNT HAVE 80 PSI BECAUSE THE STICK HE USED HAD SO MUCH DURATION.      HOFFY

between the flat tops and the decked heads i am running 10.5:1 compression right now.  any comments about that?  i have a life time of experience working on vehicles but only about 2 years of high performance stuff so anything you think might be beneficial to know would be appreciated.  recommend a cam profile?  i am planning to buy the 350 fast burn heads as my next major purchase.  What do you think about that?  And the cam profile i have now what do you think about that it's not very much is it? Also when you say:

"BUT KEEP IN MIND THAT YOUR NOW AT A POINT WHERE THIS IS BECOMING A FINE LINE BETWEEN WHAT YOU CAN PRODUCE WITH THESE COMPONENTS AND WHAT YOU CAN GET TO THE GROUND"

what do you mean exactly?  am i geared to high in my rear? I have 11inch tires and i plan to upgrade to a set of 10.5 rims at some point.  What changes could i make to get more "to the ground"?

thanks.

AFTER REVIEWING YOUR PREVIOUS POST IM REALLY IMPRESSED WITH YOUR COMPRESSION RATIO,THIS OPENS ALOT OF OPTIONS FOR THIS BUILD.BEFORE I GET OFF TRACK,AS FAR YOUR SUSPENSION NEEDS GO IT REALLY DEPENDS ON IF YOUR REALLY HOOKING UP GOOD.THERES LIITLE THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO AND THERE REALLY SIMPLE.AS FAR AS YOUR CURRENT SETUP IT LOOKS VERY PROMISING.LITTLE THINGS INCLUDE STUFF LIKE SPRING RATES,PINION ANGLES BUT IF YOUR PUTTING IT TO THE GROUND DONT WORRY ABOUT IT UNTIL IT BECOMES AN ISSUE.IN A PREVIOUS POST YOU MENTIONED ROLLER CAM AND I DONT REMEMBER FOR SURE IF THE 85 BLOCK WAS SETUP FOR ROLLER(I DONT BELIEVE IT WAS,BUT COULD BE WRONG)?I DONT MIND SUGGESTING A GRIND FOR YOUR BUILD BUT WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ROLLER OR FLAT TAPPET? 10.5 COMPRESSION RATIO IS PERFECT FOR A STREET GRIND.HONESTLY,OR IN MY OPINION I ALWAYS DECIDE WHAT I WANT TO ACCOMPLISH AND A CAM IS CHOSEN THEN.THIS IS WHERE IT CAN GET TRICKY BECAUSE IF YOU WANT TO RUN YOUR FACTORY CASTINGS THAT YOU HAD REBUILT I NEED MORE SPECS ON SPRINGS TO FIGURE THE CORRECT LIFT BECAUSE FACTORY CASTINGS DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH CLEARANCE ON THE TOP OF THE VALVE GUIDES FOR A STRONG ROLLER GRIND,THIS CAN BE CORRECTED BY MACHINING THE GUIDES FOR PROPER CLEARANCE.BUT IF YOU STAY WITH FLAT TAPPET THEN I CAN GET YOU INTO THE BALL PARK WITH A FEW DIFFERENT OPTIONS(DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU WANT TO DO,DAILY DRIVER,STRIP)IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT LEVEL OF STREETABILITY YOUR LOOKING FOR.AND WHEN YOU GET INTO SOME OF THIS "TUNING" YOU CAN START TO SELECT YOUR STALL SPEEDS AND EVEN THOUGH THIS FORUM WENT A LITTLE OFF SUBJECT YOU WOULD NEED TO DECIDE ON SPRAY. WHETHER OR NOT YOU WILL NEED AN ANTI BALLOONING CONVERTER.THATS FUNNY THAT WE ARE JUST NOW GETTING TO ADDRESSING THAT ISSUE!I DID GET TO THINKING ABOUT YOUR INDUCTION ISSUES A LITTLE TODAY AND AS I STATED BEFORE I REALLY DONT WONT YOU TO BE BANGING YOUR HEAD AGAINST THE WALL OVER THIS BUT YOU SHOULD CONSIDER AN UPGRADE IF YOU WANT THIS THING TO BE SUPER RESPONSIVE(AT LEAST AFTER YOU CHANGE CAM)YOU WILL HAVE TO LOOK AT INJECTOR UPGRADE,PORT MATCHING AND A LARGER THROTTLE BODY.THESE UPGADES ARE GOING TO BE NEEDED IN THE FUTURE BUT YOU COULD GET BY FOR NOW.JUST REMEMBER THAT ALL THE CAMS AND CYLINDER HEADS ARE ONLY AS GOOD AS WHAT THEY HAVE AVALIBLE TO THEM IN AIR FLOW.EVERY THING ELSE IS LOOKING VERY GOOD AND I THINK YOU COULD SURPRISE ALOT OF GUYS WITH THIS 305.KIND OF LIKE A SURPRISE ATTACK.IM TELLING YOU I HAVE MURDERED SOME STANGS WITH MY 84 CARLO 305 AND I WAS JUST DICKING AROUND WITH A COUPLE OF SETUPS BACK THEN.IF YOU GO WITH THE FAST BURN HEADS YOU COULD OPEN UP EVEN MORE OPTIONS,BUT YOU NEED TO DECIDE ON WHAT LEVEL OF STREETABILITY YOUR NEEDING SO YOU CAN DETERMINE POWERBAND.ALSO DONT GET YOUR HEADS JUST YET BECAUSE IM NOT SURE OF THERE VALVE SIZE AND YOU DONT WONT CLEARANCE PROBLEMS.NOT SURE BUT IF THEY ARE 2.02 AND 1.6 THEY WILL NOT WORK.EVEN IF YOU HAVE BORED 60 OVER THEY WILL HIT THE CYLINDER WALL EVEN AT LOW LIFT THEY DONT FIT INTO THE BORE.POST A LITTLE MORE INFO ON YOUR GOALS AND WE CAN GO FROM THERE.     PS SORRY ABOUT THE LONG POST,ALWAYS HAVE ALOT TO SAY.     HOFFY

ALSO KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS BUILD IS GETTING CLOSE TO THE MAX YOU CAN PUT ON THIS BLOCK WITHUOT THE SPLAYED FOUR BOLT MAIN CAPS AND A MAIN GIRDLE.YOU MAY GET BY FOR A WHILE IF YOUR NOT CONSTANTLY PUSHING IT HARD BUT FOR REAL PERFORMANCE I WOULD SUGGEST THESE UPGRADES BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE WE TALKED ABOUT.AND IF YOUR TURNING OVER 5500 RPM I HIGHLY SUGGEST ARP "WAVE LOCK"ROD BOLTS TO KEEP THE RODS IN THE BLOCK.              HOFFY

i really hope these will work on my 305 because i have had my heart set on them for months now.  shitty if they don't.

i plan to add the 4 bolt mains but i didn't want to do that until after i stroke the motor so i guess for right now i basically just want to get what i can out of this bottom half without going to deep.  i want a weekend and evening driver maybe i will put 100 miles a week on this car probably not even 50 though.  actually if i think hard about it i probably will never put 50 miles on it in a week.  but i want to have the option of driving it around town and yet if i need to do 70 on the highway i want that option too.  but for the most part i want to be able to run 10's at the strip.  that is my absolute goal.  if that is not attainable then i want to run as fast as i possibly can you know what i mean?

the 1985 was not a roller but the 1991 was so the heads are set up for the roller.

question:

What difference does the block make if it was or was not a factory roller motor?  i really don't know and i just asked someone that same question Sunday and he didn't know either.

is it just about the little spider girdle thing?  can't i just have the motor tapped for the bolts to hold that in?  also nobody but me has touched this motor, i am doing all the work.  other than the decking of the heads and the choosing of the cam i have done it all.  okay i am responding to your wrong post and now i can't remember what all you said so i will post this and then click to reply to your other post.

last but not least do not apologize for your long posts it is appreciated.

i have been thinking about this tbi upgrade:

50mm bored GM TBI throttle body (stock is 42mm) -  powder coated CHROME
Most all throttle linkages & connector hookup combinations available for 87-95 GM Trucks, F-body, Cars, SUVs + more
Ultimate TBI modifications + bore yield 750cfm* (stock is 420cfm)

this is also another option i have and is actually a little cheaper

54mm bored and rebuilt BBC TBI to fit most all GM 87-95 BBC applications, optionally we can fit with SBC 1987-95 Truck/Suburban/Tahoe/Blazer, F-body, Caprice, or Imapla SBC linkage - email for details
Will fit your HOT 350, 383, 406, 454, or 502 stroker motor
We have both TPS sensor styles available - round and flat plug
Your stock SBC throttle body is 42mm and 420cfm, your stock BBC is 50mm -  this BIG BOY is 54mm & flows a whopping 850cfm

i was planning on a 2400 stall convertor so that i can retain the type of streetability that i want.  what do you think about that idea?

i really have my plan set on a twin turbo setup i do want to add nos kit but probably only like a 150 shot for when i really need it.  what if i have the cylinders overbored and sleeved do you think the block could handle it then?  i am thinking that at that point when i reach that level it will just be cheaper to go to the 350 then it would be to sleeve the 305.  is that right or wrong?  i mean can the 350 even handle what i am planning without being sleeved?

I have no idea if i have answered your questions or not.  i think i ma probably giving your more info i just don't know if it is what you were asking for.  let me know.

thanks.

MY LAPTOP JUST SCREWED ME OVER,IT STARTED DOWNLOADING UPDATES HALFWAY THROUGH MY LAST POST AND YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I CAN WRITE,ANYWAY I MUST NOT HAVE BEEN PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION BECAUSE I THOUGHT YOU HAD A TUNED PORT SYSTEM.IF THIS THING IS TBI I URGE YOU TO SCRAP IT,I TOLD YOU BEFORE THAT I HAD AN OPEN MIND ABOUT THIS STUFF BUT IF GM EVER SCREWED UP IT WAS WITH THE TBI.I WAS TELLING YOU TO REPLACE THE THE THROTTLE BODY FOR A TUNED PORT,MY BAD.NO BIG DEAL BUT THESE THINGS DONT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH PERFORMANCE AT ALL.IF YOUR DEAD SET ON KEEPING IT, ABOUT THE BEST UPGRADE YOU CAN DO IS INSTALL A THROTTLE BODY FROM A EARLY 90'S BIG BLOCK.A COUPLE OF THE BIG NAMES ALSO MAKE A DECENT INTAKE FOR TBI AS WELL.DO YOU HAVE A PERFORMANCE CHIP?I WAS BUSY TODAY AND DIDNT GET A CHANCE TO CHECK INTO THE FAST BURN HEADS BUT SHOULD KNOW BY THIS WEEKEND.IM WITH YOU ON THESE HEADS BECAUSE IF THERE ANYTHING LIKE THE VORTECS I USED IN THE PAST THEN YOU WILL GET AWESOME NUMBERS OUT OF THEM.YOU REALLY DONT HAVE TO RUN HUGE CAM WITH THESE HEADS BECAUSE OF THEIR FLOW(YOU CAN END UP TRYING TO PUT MORE INTO THE ENGINE THEN WHAT IT CAN USE)UNLESS YOU GO TO FORCED INDUCTION,BUT KEEP IN MIND WHAT I SAID BEFORE ABOUT THE STRESS LIMITATIONS OF THIS BLOCK.AND ALSO YOU CANT BORE AND SLEEVE A 305 BECAUSE YOU WOULD BORE SO MUCH TO GET A SLEEVE IN THAT THERE WOULDNT BE ANYTHING LEFT TO SUPPORT THE SLEEVE(EVEN IF IT COULD BE DONE YOU COULD ONLY BRING IT BACK TO AN ORIGINAL BORE).I DO THINK THEY WILL WORK BUT HAVENT CONFIRMED THIS YET.I ALSO WANTED TO COMMENT ON THE STALL SPEED BECAUSE WHEN WE TALKED ABOUT SREETABILITY THIS WILL REFLECT STALL WITH WHAT YOUR LOOKING FOR IN TERMS OF POWERBAND.FOR EXAMPLE,IF YOUR LOOKING FOR TOP END YOUR GOING TO SUFFER IN LOW END.YOU DONT WANT TO BE RUNNING A CAM SETUP FOR 2400-6400 RPM AND STILL EXPECT TO CRUISE IN HIGH GEAR ON THE FREEWAY AT 1800 RPM(THE CONVERTER WILL DROP OUT SO YOU WOULD CONSTANTLY HAVE TO STAY IN IT)BUT THATS WHERE YOUR 4.10 GEARS START TO COME INTO THE PICTURE.I LOT OF GUYS ONLY THINK ABOUT GETTING OFF THE LINE BUT WHEN THEIR ROLLING AROUND ON FRIDAY NIGHTS THEY GET PISSED OFF THAT THEIR HAVING TO STAY IN 1ST AND 2ND GEAR TO CRUISE SO ALL OF THIS IS IMPORTANT WHEN WE TRY TO FIGURE YOUR LEVEL OF STREETABILITY.I REALLY DO SUPPORT YOUR IDEA OF A STRONG 305 BUILD BUT WISH I COULD TALK YOU OUT OF TRYING THE TWIN TURBO SETUP(EVEN AT 10 PSI I REALLY THINK THE BLOCK WOULD CRACK)AND I STILL STAND BY MY WORD THAT THESE BLOCKS ARE SOLID TO THE 500HP MARK WITH THE BERFORE MENTIONED UGRADES TO THE MAIN CAPS.SEND ME YOUR NUMBER AND A TIME THATS GOOD FOR YOU WE CAN TALK ABOUT THIS STUFF MORE IN DEPTH.    mr.hoffy@wowway.com  I ALWAYS HAVE SO MUCH TO SAY AND I CANT TYPE VERY FAST(THE LAST COUPLE OF NIGHTS MY WIFE WAS GIVING ME LOOK LIKE ARE YOU DONE YET?)SO GET AT ME LATER.    HOFFY

hey man,

that sucks abut your laptop craping out on you.  anyway yes i am looking for a custom high performance chip.  i was trying to decide between a chip or stud girdles and then i found out that a chip is close to $400.00 so i will be buying th girdle first.  As far as the tbi yes i would really like to keep the tbi set up and if you say the bbc tbi is the best thing i can do then that is what i will go with that bored out 454 tbi.

let me shed a little more light on my game plan for you.  all i am trying to do is to push this setup to its absolute limit.  i am not really concerned with whether or not i could get more power if i changes this or that. i want to get everything i can out of this set up and then move on to my next project.  i plan to collect Camaros.

after i spend $15000.00 on this camaro the project will be done in my eyes(but of course it is never REALLY done, right?  then i will buy another camaro and do the same thing.  i am planning to have this current project done by the end of 2010 and then i am going to find a 1981 z28 and start all over again.  are you with me know.  can you kind of understand why i am doing this the way i am?  Then i will give my self a $15000.00 budget on the '81 (after the price of the purchase) and i will do the same thing with that car.  and then my plan after that is to buy a 1993 camaro with the multi port fuel injection and do the same thing.  you got me?

i want to grab the last year that a camaro was available with the multi port and then see what i can do with it.  to me it is not about having the absolute fastest camaro in the world but only about seeing what I can do.  what kind of ability i do i have.  and what are all these induction systems capable of when someone spends the time and money to find out rather then just pulling it all out and putting in a a ls3 or a tbi 350 or an lt1.  i don't want to do it the way that everybody else does it because that is just the same old same old.  i want to do it differently and stand out.  and it isn't like i can't build some fast cars this way.  maybe i won't be as fast as some of the same old same old guys, but then again what if i am?  wouldn't that be something?

that is my mind set on this project.

I am very busy today i will drop you an e-mail today or tomorrow.

late

I WISH I HAD THE TIME AND MOTIVATION YOU GOT.I WOULD BE HAPPY TO FINISH MY CAMINO BUILD AND ITS A 305 THIS TIME.IM LOOKING FOR ANOTHER RIDE TO INSTALL MY 383 SETUP INTO.I THINK I GOT MY BUDDY TALKED INTO TRADING HIS 85 C10 SHORTBED FOR MY YAMAHA BLASTER.IM JUST WORKING SO MANY HOURS LATELY THAT I DONT HAVE THE ENERGY TO GET GOING.I DONT KNOW WHAT YOU DO FOR A LIVING BUT I WORK ON FIRE TRUCKS AND AMBULANCES,ENGINEERING ELECTRICL SYSTEMS AND SOME MECHANICAL.SO ITS REALLY HARD TO FINISH MY PROJECTS AFTER I WORK ON THIS *** ALL DAY.I HOPE TO HAVE MY RIDE GOING BY THIS SUMMER,I WANT TO HIT UP SOME CRUISE INN'S AND SHOWS THIS SUMMER/FALL.WHEN I GET THIS 305 FINISHED AND DROPPED IN THE CAMINO IM GOING TO START BAGGING IT ON 22,S.I REALLY THINK YOU WILL BE IMPRESSED WITH YOUR RESULTS ONCE WE GET YOU ENGINE COMBO FINALIZED.I USED TO SIDE WIH THE(GET A 350,THE 305 IS JUNK)GUYS UNTIL I SAW SOMEBODY ELSE BUILD THIS NECK SNAPPING 305 ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO.LIKE I SAID I ONLY USE THEM WHEN THATS WHAT I GOT AND HAVE BUILT THREE AWESOME CARS WITH THEM. I DID A COUPLE OF BIG BLOCKS BUT YOU TALK ABOUT GETTING EXPENSIVE QUICK,SO I STARTED RESEARCHING ANY THING I COULD FIND OUT ABOUT THESE SMALL BORE ENGINES.ITS ALL IN THE AIR FLOW AND FUEL MANAGEMENT.IF YOU LOOK AT THE LATE MODEL STUFF THEIR PRODUCING BIG,BIG NUMBERS OUT OF SMALL DISPLACEMENT ENGINES WITH 20-25MPG(SOMETIMES EVEN MORE).THE REASON I WAS SAYING EMAIL ME YOUR INFO IS BECAUSE IT EASIER TO EXPLAIN CERTAIN ASPECTS OVER THE PHONE THEN TO TRY AND WRITE IT ALL OUT,PLUS WE CAN SWAP PICS ON WHAT EACH OTHER IS DOING,MABYE HELP GET ME MOTIVATED ON MY BUILD.MY WIFE IS SHITTY ABOUT THE WHOLE THING BECAUSE I KEEP SPENDING THE MONEY BUT HAVENT MADE MUCH PROGRESS IN THE PAST COUPLE OF MONTHS(THINK SHE WANTS ME TO GET HER BUILD DONE,MITSUBISHI DIAMANTE ON 20'S THAT NEEDS CRANK KIT).ANYWAY,GET AT ME LATER.              HOFFY
