I have a 1992 Chevy 4x4 Automatic With Trottle Body Injection that I use for pulling a trailer and everyday use. I am building a 30 over balanced 1998 350 Vortec engine with a roller cam set up. And I want to upgrade the vortec cam. I have been told that a LTI cam or a 1996 LT4 446/450 lift roller   cam will work fine with my stock computer.. And I was also told that a Ram Jet 350 Cam will also Work with my Stock computer.. Does anyone know "FOR SURE" before I purchase one or the other. I want to use all my stock components and computer. I really appreciate any info.. Thanks, Mitch

I've got a '92 4x2 with a 350, I put a mild cam in it a few years ago. An LT1 cam will freak the computer in the truck without an aftermarket chip in the computer.

For a 4x4, you basically want a cam with a wide lobe sep for increased vacuum, non-agressive ramp rate, under .500 so you don't have problems with the stock valves, and decent duration. The factory Vortec cam runs a 110 lobe sep, so going to a 112 or 114 is gonna help big time for bottom end power.

I'd call Comp Cams, tell them what you're looking for, and see what the tech guys recommend. If you've made any mods to the vortec heads be sure to tell them.

I'd also go ahead and plan on getting a performance chip for the computer from either Hypertech or Superchips to make the most of the cam and motor with your '92s TBI system.

One more thing, you'll need to get the performance TBI manifold from GM Performance Parts that has the Vortec bolt pattern, your '92 TBI manifold won't work on the '98 Vortec motor. Part No. is 12496821

Hi there,
I already have the GMPP VORTEC TBI intake and all the parts I need to finish the Engine Rebuild. I just need a Cam to work...

Now I am really confused!! Because I talked to a Chevy Engine Builder Specialists on the phone today and he told me that I could run a LT1 Cam and shouldn't have any problems. He said the Lt1 Roller Cam would make Great Vacuum and it has 203/208 @50 and .450/.460 lift with 116 LSA.

What size cam did you run ?

I still have the Stock Vortec Roller cam.
But I would like to upgrade since I spent all this money boring it 30 over and Balancing the rotating assembly.
I appreciate your help... thanks, Mitch

You can run the LT1 cam, but you can do better for a truck application. I looked up that cam in the GMPP catalog, the lobe sep isn't listed, catalog says it's been discontinued. They must have some stock left ont he shelf.

I used a Crane Part No. 119815 cam in my truck. 112 lobe sep, .429 Intake and .452 exhaust lift.

The GMPP guys are great, but they have a fairly limited cam selection. That's why I'd still give Comp Cams a call and see what they recommend.

Hi, Comp Cams recommended a 08-500-8 480/488 206/212 with LSA 112. And I talked to guy that had the same cam and he said he had to run a Programmer or Chip Burner.

And I kind of like to get away with out messing with the Computer if anyway possible. Unless it would really make my set up work better and SAVE GAS MILEAGE if you know what I mean ?
