Help me out on my bowtie conversion. I've been racing a big block F-150 mud truck for years, and the competition is moving to lighter, faster trucks. So, I'm building a 1991 S-10. My delima, the class I run in calls for production head castings, and no forced induction/nitrous. My bottom end is a 4 bolt main 350 block, flat top hyperutectic pistons, and I'm undecided on either a stock stroke scat crank, or going to a 383 crank. What heads / cam can get me into the 500 hp range with a little work? The truck sees only VERY small amounts of time driven off the track so streetability isn't the biggest concern, and I have easy acess to 110 octane unleaded.

On the crank, since you mud race and need a ton of torque, I'd go with the stroker crank.
On the heads, if you are allowed factory aluminum heads, I'd get a set of Corvette L98 heads (used on early C4 Corvettes). They have good flow numbers (even better after some porting work) are fairly easy to find, and offer the lighter weight of aluminum.
If you have to run an iron head, try and score a set of iron Vortec heads off a 96-98 Chevy truck. Next option would be a set of 492 heads.

I've gota set of iron Vortec heads, I'll have to look into the L98 heads, on occasion I can score a good deal on stuff from my cousins salvage yard. Any cam reccomendations? This will the first smallblock I've built aside from stock rebuilds, and slapping on a top end box kit.

The iron Vortec's are good heads, but a little less weight on the front end will help you out in this kind of racing, so I'd try to score a set of L98 Corvette heads. LT1 heads won't work because of the reverse flow cooling those motors used.

I wish this post was a week earlier...My buddy just sold a set of brand new L98 heads off of his ZZ4 engine for like $500....cheap...he swaps those L98 heads out for the 96-98 vortect heads...he said he gains 15 Hp over the L98's .

I found a good deal on a set of alum. Vortec heads that have been ported. The owner took them off of a 350 because they were "too much head" for his street car. What Flat tappet cam would you guys reccomend with such a set of heads. I will be running about a 3000 rpm converter, single plane intake, and mechanical secondary carb.

Likewise, I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but the aluminum vortec head is produced by GM performance parts, It was never used on a factory engine, but it does indeed exist.

Sorry, I didn't realize your buddies have recently released ported aftermarket heads laying around...
When I think of vortec heads, I think of production heads that came on engines deemed "vortec" motors, I don't think of Bowtie heads. Granted, aftermarket aluminum versions do exist and if that's what you got, good for you. Now just hope that the person that ported knew what they were doing...

Hopefully so, they were done by a pretty reputable local shop. So I pretty much trust the work that was done.
