Hi all. Getting ready to rebuild a 400 sb to put in a Fiero (i know, i know.... but... it is a Chevy engine LOL). I pulled this 400 out of my truck to put a 454 in. I have always been a believer in "bigger is better"... but.... this is the first time i've started to stray. I've ridden in two Fieros with stock 350 crate engines. VERY quick. I'm thinking that a 400 has more torque than i need/want, (never thought i'd ever hear myself think such blaspheme)... but... I'm thinking smaller crank from a 350 or 305 ?? go for rpm's and top end and blow off some of the bottom end... pick it up higher in range ?? Like a GIANT bore / short stroke 327 or something. Any ideas ?? BTW... a small block with aluminum heads only weights 65 pounds more than the stock 2.8 v6... in a 2700 pound car... Perfect combo for passing tourist traffic in the mountains of Colorado. Mmmm . ?? Any ideas ? Kit "the Old Fart"

hi
i think that instead of reducing displacement is better to use a longer rod ,let's say 5.7 or 6.0 that will make it rev'up a lot more happier.

longer rods make more torque so i advise against that. what year is the 400 block(journal sizes)
just build the 400 mild not a street screamer. ypu could play with the torque with your cam.(intake/exhaust lobe seperation)the more seperation the more torque. There are many ways of manipulating hp and torque.

The problem i see with this is that to much torque will kill that original 5 speed even if its a getrag, if you check ebay on USED NASCAR PARTS you could manipulate putting a 327 crank in a 400 imagine that long as those carrilo rods and pistons would fit or go custom, cheap too
