Attention Kevin McClelland

I have a L31-350 Vortec eingine out of a 1998 4WD Chevy Tahoe (stock) (100k mileage).  I would like to put this engine in the car without any machine work, and get it to run low 12 seconds.  What heads, camshaft, intake package could I use to best get near the above goal?  Being a stock shortblock I don't think I want to risk RPM much over 6500 RPM.  If my ET goal is too low, please give me your ideas to get as much as I can.  If 6500 RPM is too low, I do have some parts:  Holley 300-25 single plane intake, 750 mechanical secondary carb.  It is going in a 1986 Monte Carlo SS, back halfed, 9" rear with 410-456 gears, 3 link ladder bar set up, turbo 350 manual shift valve body trans, approx car weight with driver 3300 lbs.  Approx what RPM range would your package put the motor at?  What torque converter stall speed would you use?  What brand torque converter? What are the specs on a stock L31 Vortec engine, roller camshaft in particular?

I'm not Kevin McM but in a vehicle that light and with that gearing I'd think low 12's are very reachable with a vortec headed 350 and a small hydraulic roller. 350 hp is all you'd need with a stall around 2500 to get you in the 12's anyway. It's well documented that vortec's will support 400+hp with cams like the GM Hot cam. CHP has done a few articles on these buildups.
I've got a 350 w/ vortec heads, 268H flat tappet cam in a 3650lb car with 3.73 gears and a 2500 stall and I'm running 13.4@102. They say 300 lbs is worth around 3/10's and those gears should take a tenth off your 60' time. 12's no problem. Just get slicks!

At least take the time to pop the pan off and get a look at the bearings. 100 thou is alot for a "drag" motor. maybe even a dingle ball hone and a cheap set of rings.

You didnt mention you tire size. Back halved can mean alot of things. I personally wouldnt go bigger than a 9" slick. Anything else is just more wieght. If your rear end is narrowed, then forget the last statement. rear track width smaller than the front = one freaky trip down the track. And looks dorky too!

just my 2 cents hope it helps.
