Hello everyone I just wanted to get some advice about a 1997 Vortec 350 out of a silverado that I bought a few months ago. I am installing it in a 79 el camino which I am currently painting myself. The engine has approximately 90,000 miles according to the previous owner and appears to be in good shape. I know I should at least replace the oil pan, intake and head gaskets and probably a new timing chain wouldn't hurt. Do you guys think I should go through the whole engine and do a rebuild or just replace the gaskets and stick it the car. I would like to put a better camshaft in it as well so I'm not sure if the mileage would be a problem with that. I just would like to bump up the torque and horsepower a little with minimal or no computer tuning as I plan to wire the engine up and use all the fuel injection equipment. it would probably be a good idea to strip it down to short block. this will give you a good chance to inspect the lower end and see if a complete re-build is necessary. get some plasti-gauge and check bearing clearance, look over the cylinder walls for scratches, etc. if the donor truck was getting serviced regularly, wear might not be a big issue.
after that you can decide on which way you want to go, there is alot of potential in the vortec package.
