Well i hope the best for you. All the luck to you. Remeber do it for yourself and your own personal satisfaction of building up a 305. Like you said everyone does a 350 and has a nova or chevelle, do something different! Its about time we see something different.

well in my opinion with the money it would take a 305 to make 300 horses a 350 will make 400
and its always harder to break a bigger engine, no replacement for displacement
u could always stroke a 305 , but stokers kits are xpensive
look at this build 350 /w 390 hp on 87 octane , now thats a daily driver boy!

Check out this article: http://www.popularhotrodding.com/enginemasters/articles/chevrolet/0667_phrs_305_chevy_engine_blocks/index.html
372 hp from a top end rebuild. $2500 should get you most of the way, if not all the way there.

Reading all these post has left me flabbergasted. While can understand the whole 350 engine arguement I can't understand why more time couldn't have been spent trying to help the person posting the original question. There should be enough supposed talent on this site to have provided numerous suggestions on how he could accomplish his goal. Instead it appears most of the posts were spent telling him he's an idiot for wanting to achieve his goal of building a 305 to meet his needs. You, we, are supposed to be car enthusiasts not bashers. As such I would expect some disagreement but I would expect more support. I belive it's one thing to say 'hey, if I had to do this I would use a 350 instead. But if your set on using the 305 start with .........' Many build ups start the same way, use what you have and start with the basicis and work toward the more costly or time/skill intensive. Improve your exhaust. Improve your intake. Improve your cam. Improve your heads. Stroke it. Anyway, I'd like to see a comparison on a 300 hp 350 and a stroked 300 hp 305 (335). Since the 305 was a 'torque' motor and would move most anything chevy built and did it with few cubic inches to feed there must be potential for performance and mpg. The arguments I've read here remind me of the old arguements I remember about using the chevy 400 because it was a p.o.s. Use a 350 and forget the 400 but now they are 'mainstream'and getting harder to find. How about the rice burners with their 4 cyl that will get 20+ mpg and run the 1/4 mile in respectable times and the crap people would give a person trying to build. The 305 does have potential, as represented in several builds by the car rags, if only people are willing to find it vs writing it off because of their biases.

wjochem you need to talk with skyeking about the expense in trying to get a 305 to make good power. If you throw enough money at it you can make some power but most of us run off of a budget so it doesnt make sense. We are just offering advice so someone else knows theres an option for the same money.

You can make anything run with enough money. Look at the little 4 cyl junkers that can run 9s and 10s in the 1/4 with huge turbos and 50K in the motor. I can do the same thing with a BB Chevy Normally aspirated for a fraction of the cost. Therefore I always ask why. The question is why start with a weak sister when you can buy a 350 crate motor that will outperform your modified 305 for the same price, you don't have to put it together, and everthing is new. There is also no substitute for cubic inches with everything else being equal.

yup.
Also you can buy a ready to run GMPP 350 290 hp 332lbft crate motor delivered for $2750.00 ALL NEW.
305's are not worth it.
