This is a 70GMC truck-It is all stock, but engine is a goodwrench crate motor from a few years back(15 to 20K miles on it). The points were thrown in the trash long time ago like everybody did, run a new ignition(BAT) wire to yer new HEI distributor and zoom.....truck also has the one-wire electronic alternator(14 or 14.5 volts always)I have replaced the following more than once and/or swapped out to known previously functioning parts.... Distributor cap-(after two questionable ones it has a blue-streak now, brand new and came w rotor.)On third coil-(ohmed out correctly, checked it three times.)Bought a second module-(just because I wasnt 100percent sure of my testing of it)Spark plug wires-brand new 8mm silicone(the grey good ones) Spark plugs- (I went back and got Autolites124, It did have the AC Delco R45TS)
It starts and runs but still misfiring on one or two? Its weird too because every single wire(all eight) were checked while running with an inductive timing light that you can just clamp on..you know just to see if there is juice. After all that and leaving me stranded then towed home twice because there wasnt any fire at all from distributor I went out and bought a whole *** Accel billet distributor(turn-key complete). It ran but only for a week? I'm about to give this truck to the nearest scrapper, I've never seen anything like it in my life...It defies any known service manual and gear-head that I know and makes no sense at all? I've checked all the ground straps to motor and body, the ignition switch is new, I even pulled the fuse box off the firewall to ensure no circuts were exposed etc. I've read all I want to read about ohm test for any and all ignition parts,(I woke up the other morning with my meter in the bed)....Ideas from friends now are just little bits and pieces of what I've allready checked 10 times. Anybody got a clue what the *** is happening with this truck, I will listen to any suggestion and or comment anybody has.......This truck is about to become a very large planter for my backyard, but I think it would come alive and run over me...sorry I'll shut-up for now but I'm thinkn Christine at this point.Like I said it does run but is still mis-firing on one or two I cant even pin-point which ones, but I see a tow truck in my near future.

check your rotor-you may have the wrong one.All HEI rotors are not the same.I put the wrong year/make on my chevelle once and it ran like crap-it was not as wide bodywise at the end opposite the electrode by 3/16 inch. My guess is that it stifled the mechanical advance just enough to choke like 2 cylinders out. I run a 30 over 350 with an HEI for a 84 1/2 ton pickup and tried using a rotor and cap for an early 'vette. The wrong parts were identical in all aspects (tooling-boltup and appearance) except for body width.Sure hope this is it-sounds like you've been through hell!

Sometimes the metal screws that hold the rotor down can cause misfires, but very seldom. You can get plastic ones, but I don't know how good they hold up.But,My truck started running funny one time and I thought it was ignition because it was intermittent.Turned out I had broke a valve spring.Outer spring was OK and allowed truck to run fine most of the time, but inner spring was in two pieces and would occasionally jam up and cause that valve to hang up.Acted like a dead miss.Just a suggestion and not that hard to check for.Take a screwdriver and push around on the springs to make sure they didn't just "line back up".Good luck and let us know what you find.

well I have got a million thoughts going through my head. Which distributor is in it now? Are you totally sure that the problem is in the distributor. Have you verified engine mechanical issues compresion, vacum shake etc... Make sure to check for vacum leaks especialy off ports that are near the front of the engine (by cyls1&2). If you still have the HEI distributor in it, the first thing that comes to mind would be the ground strap inside the cap. there is a little ground wire that goes under the coil and then out to that port where you hooked up your power wire that you were refering too. Either the strap is missing or..did you hook up a ground to that port?
