Jrcaprai:
I would like to see more Articles about bigger inch small blocks, like 408/415/421's.
383's have been done to Death! I am so tired of 383 Articles...
I would love to see what heads these engines like, example 230cc or 215cc aluminum heads. 850CFM Carb or 950cfm. 1 3/4 or 1 7/8 Inch Headers.
I am building a 408 and am shooting for 600 HP, and there just aren't any articles about the bigger inch Small blocks.

We're in the process of putting together a big-inch small-block and planning to test various configurations with it. Another area that hasn't really been looked into is the true cost and gains of the 18- vs 23-degree heads - we're on it.

newbie2speed:
CHP- you guys rock!  Great Manifold test, great small block builds last month, especially the 327!

Here's a few thoughts...

#1- Oils- list some of the oil out there that CURRENTLY have enough zinc in them to support a flat tappet or solid flat... for examply Brad Penn Grade #1, or Kendall's new 20w50 blend (supposedly 1200ppm zinc and 1100ppm phos), Valvoline VR1, Castrols new Syntec Blend 20w50. And compare the revised emission diesel oil and what zinc & P they have left in them with the CI4+ levels or whatever they are.

Pardon my oldschool but the 327 build was awsome last month...that engine to me is what an average joe builds and just got me thinking... could I build a 7,500- 8K rpm small block for $5,000 for the street? Long story short, I was thinking
283 +.060 over, Good machine work, ARP fasteners, decent set of rods (crower sportsman 5.7's SJ come to mind), Custom forged pistons, really big solid flat tappet, single plane, vortec heads or 180-190cc set of aluminum heads.  My ride is a 55 150 4speed with manual breaks and manual steering so I never have to worry about vaccum! Sorry for the old school!

We run the Brad Penn oil in our race motor and I absolutely love their stuff. It would be a good idea to explore into a quality oil story.

Also, glad you enjoyed the 327 build. We recently followed along with a beefed up 327 that I think you'll dig. It was a little more than $5k, but it buzzed to the moon and it made really impressive power.

Thanks,
H

I am right there with you brother - this thing does not have to be a million dollar outing.  I would love to send you the specs on my e85 12:1 compression big block.  I just think that there are some build basics that have got to be followed when building a BB chevy but it doesn't have to cost a mint to do it.  There is too much talk about ultimate this and ultimate that - lets show the meat and potatos of the build.  600 horsepower can be had all day on e85 or pump gas without having to break the bank.  I hope this happens!    chris

I just sent this in an e-mail to chevyhi'at'sourceinterlink.com but I don't know if that is the best place to send this stuff. Is there a better address for story ideas (I have a three part, affordable, series of articles in mind that I wrote about in my e-mail.)

Keeping it short, I'd like to see you test the new Edelbrock 3850 elbow on a VicEFI on a 383. Why, because I think it might be the best non-custom EFI manifolds out there and I'd like to see what it would do a street motor, thus a 383. I know it would probably kick ass on a 427 but I want to know how this manifold will play on the smaller CID motors and what RPM it will be peaking at. We all know single planes peak high on carb'ed setups, but does the same theory hold true when it becomes a dry-flow intake??? (Also, I don't care if it is a VicEFI or a Pro-Parts HurricaneEFI, I just want to see another option for EFI on a 383.)

Thanks,
Chris

I agree, I own a 77 Monza Spyder, and I'd love to see you guys build a LS Spyder that's at home in the streets or teaching those blue oval guys a lesson at the track!

I would very much like to see problems normal car guys run into and how to fix them. Basic timing stuff, how to adjust your carb. Gremlins that come with hot rods and how to chase them away. I really don't want to build a $10,000 dollar motor with twin turbos that makes 600 HP. The one I have gives me enough to worry about. How to change your 69 Malibu to Fuel injection from a wrecking yard motor the easiest (and most economical way) Thanks.

That sounds like a nice DIY article. I could see how that would be very popular.
