I am having a hard time adjusting the TV cable on my monte carlo. The tranny shifts too early. I have only played with the cable a little but i also have to set the timing. The car seems to have a stall point durring initail take-off. after that, the tranny shifts too early and wilkl start to make the engine sound bad. I have manually shifted to first and the car will run fine besides the stall. I believe the stall is due to bad timing and maybe a little carb problem. does anyone have any ideas? I would appreciate any information i can recieve. I just bought this car for 500. the guy couldn't get it running. all that was wrong was timing 180 out and a 84 cent plugg on the side of the engine. this enginge is recently rebuit which makes me think that the rocker arms need to be looked at. that may also be a reason the stall is there. thanks for any help.

Yeah, sounds like the stalling issue is related to timing. Sounds like you might want to check the lifter preload, maybe reset the preload on all the lifters just to be sure.

On the trans adjustment, I've got a '92 silverado with TBI injection liek the later Monte Carlos had. I don't know if the carb equipped cars have the same adjustment cable. Mine has a little button on the side you press that lets the adjuster ratchet out.

Let me see if I can dig something up on this. Another option is if you've got a good transmission shop in your area you can trust, take the car there and have them get the shift adjustment set correctly.

The transmission shop is a good idea. You can try to pull the tv cable towards the firewall in increments of about an eighteenth of an inch. This will cause later shifts and more line pressure. If you over adust you could cause transmission damage.
