I want to rip out everything from an 87 firebird with tpi and the OD Tranny.

I want to put all of this into a 87 chevy full size pickup.

I have a 78 350 engine.

I would like to use the 350 block with the 1987 TPI system that is on the 305.

I have a question.

I read about the 87 heads or manifold having different Bolt styles?
Wich one is it?  Manifold to head bolts or the cylinder heads to the block?
Can I attach the 87 305 heads and manifold to a 78 350 block without modification?

Ok.

First, you can't use the 305 heads on the 350 because of the 305's smaller combustion chamber. The 305 has a small bore block.

The TPI manifold has the same bolt pattern as a standard small block Chevy, so that manifold will bolt down to your '78 350.

You'll need a harness to run the TPI system when you put it in the '87. You could adapt the harness and computer out of the Firebird, but I think you'd be better off getting a control harness/system from FAST to run the TPI. The FAST system will let you tune the fuel system more for your engine to get the most horsepower.

You can use the 305 heads on the 350 block it's just not a good idea because of the 58cc combustion chambers. It will increase the risk of detonation.I am currently running a set on a 388 stroker.I had larger valves installed(1.94&1.60).It runs just fine but it requires higher octane fuel.(93 or higher).

The TPI manifold DOES have a different bolt pattern than the old Chevy heads. The two bolt holes in the middle of the manifold on both sides of the manifold are at an angle. You can make it work by grinding the holes slightly but it is not recommended.Try to find a set of TPI heads off of a 350 from the same year('87).

"phill" get your information straight before giving advice please. Why in the world would a 305 head not work on a 350? Backyard "rodders" have been doing it for years thinking that they will gain tons of power...

In '87 the angle of the two inside bolts did change, as someone else already said. Using the 305 heads will probably get you into a compression and detonation problem but it's your call, thousands of people have done it. The TPI will put quite the hamper on a 350 as well, not only will you need a chip burned for the stock ECM but your engine's power production will probably fall-off at 4500-5000 rpm...
