I am currently starting on an engine build for my 78 camaro . i have a 350 4 bolt main and would love to make about 500-600+ hp. My question is...should i stay with the 350 or have it stroked to a 383? either way, a supercharger is in the plans to achieve the hp #s and i am getting it bored 30'over. im trying to figure out cost vs hp gains, is it worth the extra money in terms of hp to get it stroked or would the 350 be just be fine as it is? any info is greatly appreciated. thanks

if it were me and i was planing to run a superchager i would stick with a well built 350 set up just for that. i am currently buliding a 383 for my 79 z28 and don't expect it to hit 500-600 hp with the money i have to spend. depending on what kinda blower your gonna run 600 hp should be no problem as long as all other parts can handel it
good luck

if it was me I would choose to go the bigger c.i.d. 383. It will be alot easier to accomplish your horse power goal with more cubic inch. Also if you are buying new rotating assembly the cost of new crank, rods, pistons are the same for 350 or 383.

With the charger I would stick with 350. The longer stroke of a 383 is not a good setup with a charger. However 500+ with a normally aspirated 383 is attainable. I am sitting at 475 now with mine.

GET THE RIGHT ADVANCE ON YOUR TIMING,,,,,YOU CAN'T HARDLY BEAT A BLOWN 383......EVERYTHING IS WORKABLE, IT JUST DEPENDS ON HOW BAD YOU WANT IT.

you dont really give alot of specifics about what you have now except a 350 4 bolt. If price is no object then anything is possible but I would think if your on a budget you might want to see whats usable from your 350. If the crank is still good and only needs a polish then you might have more money for things like forged rods and pistons that can handle higher boost. are you going to use the heads from your old engine or buy new vortec or aluminum heads? I think you can get to your goal with either a 350 or 383 they just might be along different paths.

If it were going in my truck I'd probably go with the 383 because that kind of power would be too much to reuse my existing crank so it wouldn't really cost me any more money, but since you're putting it in a car I would try to keep the stroke shorter and build a real screamer!
