i have a 1987 gmc that had the same motor. i put a 383 stroker with 10:1 compression and left my stock heads and intake on it. im about to put vortec heads and a 4 bbl intake on it. the stock heads with the throttle body have poor performance. i can only turn about 5500 rpms and i know it should have more. i would much rather put a carb on it. i believe you only have to put a distributor out of an older chevy in order for it to work. im not so sure about the computer i have the same question about that

Don't hijack a thread for your own problem!
For the original poster, don't expect 6500 rpm out of this machine no matter what induction is on it. The horsepower peak is more than likely around 5500 at most anyway...

Dump the TBI get a set of vortecs and put a fuel pressure regulator on your fuel line to reduce fuel pressure enough to not blow the seals on your carb. The 305 stock computer would definitely not perform at level you would like, and the heads are notoriously poor performers.
