It's been a while since I have had to replace the mechanical fuel pump on my 65 Impala. It's got an original 396 325hp motor.

I have the pump off and a new one ready to go. Now I can't remember how the actuation rod engages. Do I just put the pump on and it's ready to go, or do I need to back the rod off by turning the crank until the end is visible.

There is a set screw below where the pump mounts. Do I need to mess with that?

Any help would be appreciated.

Got my answer, so I'll post it in case anybody else needs the info.

I need to turn the crank while pushing up on the rod to make sure I am on the low side of the lobe. The rod should push most all the way up. Use heavy axle grease on the rod to hold it up and install the pump.

My source wasn't sure about the set screw. Maybe I'll take it out to see if I have access to the end of the rod to push it up. It's oily and hard to get a hold of to slide it back up in the bore.
