Hey guys, i havent posted anything on here in a while but this one has me stumped.
I just got an old set of pro-topline SBC iron heads and I installed them meticulously. But upon inserting my pushrods and installing my rockers, i have a severe rocker arm/ valve tip misalingment.
The way it looks to me is that the Intake and exhaust rocker for each cylinder is pointing towards each other at the valve tip end....they look cross-eyed or pidgeon toed. I tried adjusting the guideplates but there simply was not enough room to adjust them, so I took all the guidplates off to try and align them and I still have the same problem.
I was told that i may need offset rocker arms to cure this but to the best of my knowledge the intake ports are in the stock location. These are small runner(180cc?) iron heads...Not some huge 220cc race head.
Also the heads dont have individual holes for each pushrods to enter the lifter valley but instead have one large oval hole joining each intake and ehaust pushrod...so that there are 4 pushrod holes per head instead of 8...is this normal?
This is my first set of aftermarket heads so I am clueless. I have a good set of full roller rockers right now and offset rockers are most certainly out of the budget....is there somthing that i am missing or do i just need to bite the bullet and save for new rockers.
Sincerely, please and thank you God bless -Shred

Check your pushrod length . Some aftermarket heads require longer pushrods. Hope thats it!

Do these heads have guide plates? I fthey do you might want to loosen rocker studs and usually there is a little adjustment of your guide plate back and forth, see if you can line up your rocker to get propper alignment and then retighten your studs.

YOUR POST HAS BEEN UP FOR A WHILE AND IM NEW TO THE GROUP,SO IF YOU HAVE NOT FOUND AN ANSWER,HERE IS MY DOUBLE CONTRIBUTION TO THE PENNY JAR.I RAN ACROSS THE SAME PROBLEM WITH TWO SETS OF HEADS I BUILT.I HAD TO BUY ADJUSTABLE GUIDE PLATES,MADE BY ISKY.SUMMIT AND JEGS BOTH STOCK THEM FOR AROUND $55.00.AFTER I TEST FIT THEM ON THE HEADS,THEY STILL WOULD NOT GIVE ENOUGH ROOM FOR PROPER ALIGNMENT.WHAT I DID NEXT WAS GRIND EACH MALE AND FEMALE SIDE OF THE ADJUSTER SLIDES,NOT THE BOLT HOLES,UNTIL I HAD PLENTY OF ROOM TO SET ALIGNMENT PROPERLY.A THIRD AND FOURTH HAND WOULD HAVE MADE GETTING EVERYTHING POSITIONED AND HELD TIL TIGHT A LOT EASIER.AFTER EVERYTHING WAS IN PROPER ALIGNMENT,TIGHTENED,CHECKED AND RECHECKED,REMOVE THE PUSHROD AND ROCKER ARM AND WELD THE GUIDEPLATE HALVES TOGETHER WHILE STILL BEING HELD TIGHT BY THE ROCKER STUDS.CLEAN THEM UP AND YOU SHOULD BE GOOD TO GO.JUST BE PATIENT.THE PUSHROD HOLES ARE OPENED UP BECAUSE OF THE SIZE AND REPOSITIONING OF THE INTAKE RUNNERS,AT LEAST THATS WHAT DART TOLD ME.HOPE THIS HELPS,..........NICK
