I have a set of big block oval port heads last three of casting number is 049.  From what I was told form some of the local guys these are the best production cast iron heads you can get for a super street build.  what do you guys think about the heads and do you know of any builds I can look at to get some ideas.  Looking to build a super strong big block for the street.  I have a 406 with afr 180 heads in my 1/2 ton swb truck and it runs real strong and I want to build a big block to see what all the fuss is about.

Thanks

Yes those heads work very well. They are almost identical to the 781 casting. They work best when you go to 2.19 intake and 1.88 exhaust valves . They just need a slight clean up on the bowls and a gasket match. Also unshroud the valves by matching the combustion chamber to the head gasket. Go with a performer rpm intake and a comp XE274H with about 9.5 or 10 to 1 compression and you can make an easy 550+hp and mega torque to boot. Years ago John Lingenfelter built a 454 in hotrod magazine with 049 heads I think 10.5 to 1 comp and put in a roller cam and made around 650 HP. There's guys running high nines with those heads so they are no joke. I buy them up every time I see a set I have four sets already.
